Birthday toast samples

So there we were. Sitting at dinner. Normal evening. And Mum puts down her fork and says — completely calm — 'I'm going to Vietnam.' No build-up. No 'I've been thinking about this for a while.' Just: Vietnam. Two weeks' notice. She came back with a motorbike licence. That is my mother in one story. Sixty years old, and she has never once waited for permission — from a calendar, from common sense, or from us. But here's the thing about her. The motorbike licence is funny. The Vietnam thing is impressive. What's harder to explain — and what I want to try to say tonight — is that through all of it, through every plan she hatched and every room she made louder just by walking into it, she has never once made me feel like a burden. Not once. Not even close. So. To a woman who is sixty, unstoppable, and probably already planning the next trip she hasn't told us about yet — Mum, we love you. Please raise your glasses. To Mum.

We were crouched in the dark. Lights off. Completely silent. Waiting for Alex. Five minutes. Ten. Someone ate all the chips. Fifteen minutes. Twenty. We started to wonder if we'd got the wrong night. Twenty-five minutes in, the door finally opened. That is Alex. In one story. And here's the thing — I've never once doubted that Alex would show up. Late, yes. Absolutely. But they will always, always show up. Need someone to help you move at 8am on a Sunday? Alex is there. Probably at 8:27. But there. The thing is — once Alex finally walked in that night, coat still on, completely unaware of how long we'd been waiting — they spent the rest of the evening making sure everyone else was having a good time. That's Alex. Shows up late. Stays the latest. Gives you the coat off their back and then apologises it took so long. Thirty looks good on you, Alex. Mostly because you actually made it here on time tonight, which I think we should all acknowledge is genuinely historic. So — please raise your glasses. To Alex. Worth every minute of the wait.
